Tunisian security forces on Monday traded gunfire with presumed Islamist militants in a suburb of the capital, the National Guard said, without giving details of casualties.

"The National Guard received information about the preseTunisia Forcesnce of a terrorist group in a house in Raoued, in the province of Ariana," spokesman Tarek al-Amraoui told radio station Express FM.

"During an attempt to enter the house, there was an exchange of fire. The operation is ongoing," he added, without giving any information on casualties or the group's identity.

The interior ministry had earlier called on the media not to publish information about ongoing security operations, to facilitate their chances of succeeding.

Witnesses said they had heard gunshots and had seen members of the security forces deploy in Raoued, several kilometres (miles) from a popular beach in a Tunis suburb.
