Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, who was admitted to a Beirut hospital late Thursday, underwent a successful open-heart surgery on Friday.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, who was admitted to a Beirut hospital late Thursday, underwent a successful open-heart surgery on Friday, a Lebanese medical source said.

The top Syrian diplomat is currently at an intensive care unit at the American University of Beirut (AUB)'s medical center, where he underwent the surgery.

Security has been stepped up around the hospital, the source said, noting that hospital officials had been asked not to leak any information about the minister's health.

Lebanese media also reported that Syrian Ambassador in Beirut Ali Abdelkraim and Lebanese Finance Minister Ali Hassan had both visited the Syrian FM in hospital.
