The European Union on Wednesday adopted the labeling of products from Jewish settlements, in a move that Israel condemned.

At a meeting in Brussels, the European Commission, the EU's powerful executive, "adopted this morning the interpretative notice on indication of origin of goods from the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967."EU flag

The notice is effectively a set of guidelines for labeling products from Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories and annexed east al-Quds and the Golan Heights, all occupied by the Zionist entity in the 1967 Six Day War.

The first instructions are set to be for food and other industries, including potentially specifying the wording to be used on labels.

For its part, Israel firmly condemned the move and summoned the bloc's envoy over the move, the foreign ministry and an EU source said.

"We regret that the EU has chosen, for political reasons, to take such an exceptional and discriminatory step, inspired by the boycott movement, particularly at this time, when Israel is confronting a wave of terrorism targeting any and all of its citizens," the Israeli foreign ministry said.

An EU source said the bloc's envoy had been summoned.
