A deadly explosion hit a church near the Nigerian capital Abuja Sunday morning, and rescuers are still rushing to provide ambulances.

The area around the scene was damaged after the blast, and the citizens are in a state of anger.

At least 28 people were killed, but the accurate number of causalities had not been specified yet.

According to AFP, extremist Islamic sect Boko Haram claimed the attack.

The agency quoted Boko Haram's spokesman Abul Qaqa as saying that "we are responsible for all the attacks in the past few days, including today's bombing of the church in Madalla... we will continue to launch such attacks throughout the north in the next few days."

Three more explosions in Nigeria were reported later Sunday, including two on Christmas Day in the city of Damaturu and another targeting a church on Christmas Eve in Gadaka.

AFP quoted a resident in Damaturu as saying that "a bomb went off at the major roundabout and another one exploded at the (secret police) office."

The other attack that hit Gadaka did not leave human casualties, only a few cars were set on fire.
