The head of the Arab League had asked the head of Hamas political bureau to ask the Syrian government to work to “halt violence” in the country.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Aarabi said he had sent a meassage to the Syrian Government by Khaled Meshaal.

"I gave him a message today to the Syrian authorities that it is necessary to work with integrity, transparency and credibility to halt the violence that is happening in Syria”, al-Arabi was speaking alongside Meshaal after a meeting in Cairo.
Meshaal "played a big role in advising the Syrians to sign the document," al-Arabi told reporters.

A team of Arab League monitors has been in Syria since December 26, trying to assess whether President Bashar al-Assad's regime is complying with a peace accord aimed at ending the crisis.

For its part, Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) said that Meshaal “doesn’t have the right” to offer mediation between Al and the Syrian Regime.

“Meshaal doesn’t have the right to enter the mediation process in favor of any regime if it was the Syrian one or another”, PLO member Yasser Abed Rabbo said.
Abed Rabbo also accused Meshaal of “interfering” in Syria internal affairs “and he doesn't have the right  to do so”.
