More Floods Hit Australia

The waters are rising fast one local official said he saw the river level go up by 1.5m (4ft 10in) in just an hour.

Thousands of Australians fled central Brisbane on Tuesday, as the city was braced for its worst flooding in 120 years, which killed nine people and left 59 missing nearby.

Facing the biggest floods since 1893, workers evacuated Australia's third largest city en masse after Brisbane River burst its banks.
In Toowoomba, just west of Brisbane, flash floods killed at least nine people with at least 70 missing.

A raging torrent of water hit Toowoomba on Monday without warning, following more than 36 hours of incessant rain.
The Queensland state premier Anna Bligh said that the death toll has reached nine.
"We have confirmed a further death. That brings the toll in this incident to nine. Tragically the police believe (the eventual toll) could be more than double that number."

Brisbane Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman, warned 6,500 homes, businesses and other properties were likely to be flooded by Thursday.
"This water is on its way…Today is very significant, tomorrow is bad, and Thursday is going to be devastating for the residents and businesses affected," he said.
The city's mayor also warned that 6,500 homes and businesses are set to flood.

The waters are rising fast; one local official said he saw the river level go up by 1.5m (4ft 10in) in just an hour.
