As Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Beirut, he met the Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and announced, in a joint press conference, that the Palestinians abide by the Lebanese sovereignty and government decisions.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Beirut today afternoon in context of a three-day official visit.
Abbas was received at the airport by the Lebanese vice PM Samir Muqbel and a number of Palestinian officials.
The Palestinian president moved immediately to Baabda Palace where he was welcomed by President Michel Sleiman.
The two leaders held a meeting and followed it by a joint press conference.
Lebanese president Michel Sleiman stated that he and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held important talks which stressed on the complete support for the Palestinians in the international arena and underscored the importance of preventing any Palestinian intervention in the Lebanese local disputes.
Sleiman asserted that Lebanon supports carrying out the international resolutions which guarantee the Palestinian rights. He also confirmed to Abbas that "Lebanon stands by the Palestinians demand to return to their homeland."
The Lebanese president said he had discussed with Abbas the issue of settling the Palestinian arms in Lebanon on the bases of the Lebanese dialogue's decisions.
Commenting on the issue of reconstructing Nahr al-Bared camp, President Sleiman said that "this issue is taken into consideration seriously, yet the financial support, that some countries vowed to donate, has not yet been given."
He further explained that he "discussed with Abbas the international efforts to revive the peace process in the Middle East in the light of the quest to find a solution to the Arab-Zionist conflict in the entire Middle East", and stressed that any solution must not be at the expense of Lebanon.
"We deal with the Palestinians fraternally, and we are ready to grant them all their basic human rights; however, we are concerned about the enemy's attempts to impose naturalization," President Sleiman said.
For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserted that the Palestinians are concerned with the stability and security in Lebanon.
He stressed that the Palestinians abide by the Lebanese government decisions concerning arms possession in the camps and that any Palestinian intervention in the Lebanese conflicts is forbidden.
Abbas further announced that "the Palestinians adopt the two-state solution which considers Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine."
The Palestinian president declared that the presence of refugees in Lebanon is "temporary," awaiting their return to Palestine.
“No one among us calls for naturalization,' Abbas stressed.
