US Secretary of State John Kerry will announce resumed Middle East peace talks before he leaves the region at the end of the week, a Palestinian official said Wednesday.
"Kerry presented an initiative to Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas in a meeting in Amman, marking progress in peace efforts," the high-ranking official said.
"The US secretary of state is determined to announce, before he leaves on Friday, a restart of negotiations," he added.
Kerry met Abbas on Tuesday, on his sixth visit to the region since becoming the US top diplomat, to discuss unblocking the peace process, which saw talks grind to a halt in September 2010.
Kerry and Abbas shared a traditional iftar dinner to break the day-long fast during the holy month of Ramadan, as they met for five hours in an upscale hotel in Jordan.
Kerry further meets later Wednesday a delegation from the Arab League to outline his progress on the Middle East peace process.
His visit comes amid Israeli anger over EU decision to ban funding the Zionist settlements.
Israeli officials accused EU of trying to frustrate Kerry's peace efforts in the Middle East.
Unlike his previous trips, Kerry will not visit the Zionist entity to meet Israeli officials.
