The son of ousted Egyptian President Mohammad Mursi said Tuesday that “the military coup will end very soon” and his father will be reinstated as president because “the tank cannot lead a civilized country.”
“President Mursi has a legitimacy,” Osama Mursi said told ABC News. Egyptians “will have their president and their constitution and their Shura Council again, I am sure.”
Osama Mursi noted that he hasn’t seen or heard from his father since the night of July 3, when the military removed Mursi from power, and worries for his safety, just as he worries for the safety of all Egyptians.
“All people are in danger now under the military coup,” he said. “The tank cannot lead a civilized country. And Egypt is a civilized country.”
Osama Mursi said no western democracy would ever allow the army to unseat an elected president, and he dismissed any possibility of political dialogue with the current military-backed government.
“There is no political way with a military coup,” he stressed.
The interview comes after the deadliest weekend since the military removed Mursi from office. Dozens of supporters of the former president were reportedly gunned down Saturday morning. The Health Ministry said at least 80 people were killed and hundreds injured in a predawn raid. The Muslim Brotherhood puts the death toll much higher.
Raising the prospect of another bloody confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood has called for mass rallies this week after the military-backed civilian government threatened to clear the protesters off the streets.
