Witnesses cited by local news media said both vehicles were speeding when they crashed sometime after 4:00 am on a road leading to the coastal city of Chiclayo.
Colonel Rodorico Cubas, the chief of the highway police, said nine passengers aboard the bus were pronounced dead at the scene and two others died en route to hospital.
