Spokesman for the Secretary General of the United Nations Martin Nesirky announced Tuesday that the team charged with investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria has completed preparations to travel to Syria and will travel from The Hague immediately upon receiving confirmation of Damascus that its agrees on the terms of work.
Upon the Syrian government confirms its approval on the form of the mission's work, the team will fly over to Syria without any delay," Nesirky said.
Earlier, Agence France Presse reported that UN inspectors team charged to investigate claims regarding the use of chemical weapons during the country's ongoing civil war, has postponed the flight due to a dispute between the UN and the Syrian government concerning the investigation mechanisms.
A team of UN inspectors led by Ake Sellstrom, a Swedish professor who was a UN chemical weapons inspector in Iraq, was supposed to travel to Syria last week.
Experts demanded guarantees regarding the investigation rules, but they didn't get them despite exchanging letters between the United Nations and the Syrian authorities," Russia Today website quoted a diplomat as saying.
The Syrian army launched a wide-scale military operation in April to put an end to the violent unrest in the country.
Syria was hit by the unrest since mid-March 2011, where the Syrian government accuses foreign actors of orchestrating the conflict by supporting the militant opposition groups with arms and money.
