US National Security Advisor Susan Rice wrote on Twitter that Washington "strongly condemns" the attacks, extending condolences for "the loss of innocent life."

Both blasts hit at the hour of weekly Muslim prayers, in the city.

Washington has frequently expressed disquiet that Syria's vicious strife could spill over and ruin Lebanon's peace.

Powerful car bombs exploded outside two Sunni mosques in the city, leaving 27 people dead and more than 350 wounded, the highest toll in an attack since Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war.
