Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif asserted on Wednesday that only terrorists could have been behind a possible chemical weapon attack on the outskirts of Damascus, Mehr news agency reported.
According to the Iranian news agency, Zarif said during a phone call with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday that “if such a thing (a chemical attack) is true, it has definitely been carried out by terrorists and takfiri groups that have shown in practice that they do not refrain from any crime.”
“Iran is in talks with the Syrian government to investigate different aspects of the issue,” Zarif said, adding that Iran strongly condemns any use of chemical weapons.
For his part, Davutoglu voiced concern about the situation in Syria and called for the continuation of consultations between Tehran and Ankara to help defuse the crisis.
In another phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the latter emphasized that the situation in Syria should be resolved only through peaceful means.
The two parts further discussed bilateral relations and the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program.
