Resistance Backer Sheikh Nasser Al-Khorafi Passes Away

Nasser al-Khorafi, head of the wealthiest family in the oil-rich Gulf state of Kuwait, has died of a heart attack in Cairo, local media reported on Sunday.

Khorafi, who was 67, founded and chaired The Khorafi Group which has stakes in major Kuwaiti companies, including Zain Telecom, and has business interests in 11 foreign countries including Egypt, South Africa and Syria.

Forbes magazine placed him among the wealthiest businessmen in the Arab world. He was ranked 77 on the world's list of billionaires in 2011 with an estimated wealth of $10.4 billion. His empire spanned sectors including construction, manufacturing and retail and had investments in Kuwait’s leading financial institutions and listed firms.

He is the brother of Jassem al-Khorafi, who has been the speaker of Kuwait's parliament since 1999.

Khorafi was well known for his support to the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine, in addition to the great respect and honor he had for Hezbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

In an article published in Al Rai Kuwaiti newspaper on 12 April 2011, Khorafi praised Sayyed Nasrallah's latest speech, in which His Eminence thanked the Kuwaiti businessman for his position supporting the resistance.

In his article entitled “Glory Living or Honorable Death”, he addressed Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah saying, “When I praised your stances and heroic role, I was not expecting any thanks or praising back, for that is the least of what we could do for the resistance fighters who confront the nation's enemy night and day. Your gratitude to me has heartened me and left an impact in my soul, and I consider it a medal on my chest for as long as I am alive.”
