The Egyptian government announced on Thursday its strong rejection to any military strike against Syria, as Arab powers have been calling on the United States and the West to wage a military action in Syria.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi added in a statement that “Egypt clearly assures that it will not participate in any military strike against Syria, as it strongly opposes it based on its solid stances of opposing any foreign military intervention in Syria.”

Fahmi added that Cairo is persistent that “using force in international relations is rejected, unless it was for self-defense or under chapter seven in the UN charter.”

The Egyptian foreign minister further called upon the UN Security Council to “exert efforts to investigate the events (in Syria) and take the appropriate measures against this hideous crime,” in reference to the alleged Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons in Ghouta.

Fahmi condemned the “use of chemical weapons by any part,” as well as “the Syrian regime’s practices against its people,” stressing the importance of “finding a political solution for the situation in Syria.”

In the same context, several Egyptian political parties expressed their rejection to any military intervention in Syria.

The Egyptian Al-Ahram daily reported that Egypt’s “Rebel” Campaign's (Tamrrod) Spokesman Mahmoud Badr said that “he supports the Syrian Arab Army's intention to confront the anticipated US military strike on Syria,” rejecting any foreign military intervention within Arab territories.

Similarly, the liberal “Free Egyptian Party” considered in a statement issued Wednesday that “a military strike against Syria will further inflame and complicate the Middle East and will not solve the Syrian issue.”

The party also condemned a possible military intervention in Syria, reaffirming its solidarity with the Syrian people, and called upon the “wise people in the world” to “put pressure on governments to stop the attack on Syria in order to prevent another Iraqi scenario.”

"A military intervention in Syria will only result in destruction, devastation, thousands of dead and injured, and millions of displaced and refugees," the statement read.
