"We held yesterday fruitful negotiations with the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, and Syria has formally approved the Russian initiative in order to avert the US-led aggression," Moallem was quoted by the Russian news agencies.

The Russian suggestion included handing over the Syrian chemical weapons to an international control before destructing them.
