Ankara warned the Syrian government Wednesday it would “face the consequences” if it sought to avenge the downing of a Syrian military chopper this week.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Tuesday's bombing at Syria's rebel-held Bab al-Hawa border crossing into Turkey did not appear to be a revenge attack.
“Such retaliation against us from within Syrian territory cannot be considered,” Agence France Presse quoted Davutoglu as saying.
“The Syrian regime should know that it will face the consequences even if it thinks of retaliating,” he warned.
The Syrian army slammed the Turkish warplanes’ shooting down of a Syrian military helicopter wounding at least 12 people as hasty on Tuesday, saying the helicopter was not on a combat mission.
Syria was hit by a violent unrest since mid-March 2011, where the Syrian government accuses foreign actors of orchestrating the conflict by supporting the militant opposition groups with arms and money.
