Lebanese President Michel Sleiman denied the news circulated by some media outlets about the transfer of Syrian chemical weapons to Lebanon, calling them rumors of no validity.
In an interview with Le Figaro French newspaper published Tuesday, Sleiman expressed hope that agreements on the chemical arsenal in Syria be implemented, and thus lead to a political solution to end the Syrian crisis.
"Lebanon's interest requires that peace would prevail in the Syria," he said.
Regarding the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Suleiman pointed out that "more than 800 thousand refugees have been officially registered, in addition to 300 thousand workers, joined by the 90 thousand Palestinian refugees settled in Lebanon."
"All this constitutes more than 35% of the total population of Lebanon, which is far beyond our ability to absorb and has a significant impact on us," the Lebanese President said.
He also called on the international community to provide support for Lebanon, saying: "We need international support, especially since the whole area passes in a complete disorder. It is in everyone's interest to help us through the financial support for the Syrian refugees."
Sleiman touched Hezbollah stating that the party "played a key role in liberating most of the Lebanese occupied territory by Zionist entity in 2000, while the UN resolutions for 22 years in this framework went unheeded."
"Mistaken who thinks the army is under the influence of Hezbollah," he stressed.
