After meeting his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry, on the sidelines of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, Lavrov stated that "the meeting with the Foreign Minister, Kerry, touched on a lot of issues, notably Syria and foremost the decision of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as well as the Security Council resolution that will support the steps that must be made to destroy chemical weapons in Syria."
Lavrov pointed out that "the Russian and American sides talk about the destruction of all existing chemical weapons in Syria because there are serious concerns over the possibility of acquiring the opposition of some components of toxic substances."
"We rely on facts, and facts indicate that the Syrian government acceded to the international treaty, expressed readiness to implement the commitments immediately, and sent to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons data of its chemical stocks and their whereabouts," the Russian minister Added.
Lavrov also stressed that "talks were constructive and we have a common understanding on how to proceed and act on the basis of Geneva Accords.
He moreover expressed hopes to agree upon a UNSC resolution within the framework of Geneva, which will be set after members of the Executive Board of the Organization for the Prohibition of chemical weapons vote over their resolution.
"The organization play an important role in these issues," Lavrov stated.
