Insurgents have killed  a top intelligence officer, Jame’a Jame’a, in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ezzor.

Official news agency, Sana, reported the event on Thursday, saying Jame’a was martyred “during fulfilling national duties of defending Syria and its people and hunting terrorists in Deir-Ezzor.”

"Major General Jamaa Jamaa was martyred while carrying out his national duties to defend Syria and its people and pursuing terrorists in Deir Ezzor," state television said in a breaking news alert.

Jame’a was head of military intelligence in the province, where the government has been battling foreign-backed armed opposition fighters.

The agency gave no immediate details on where in the province Jame’a was martyred or how, but extremist forums said he died during clashes with extremist militants in the city of Deir Ezzor.
