EU Calls on Syrian Opposition to Attend Geneva II

The European Union called on the Syrian opposition to attend Geneva II conference, considering that the opposing "National Coalition" has taken the leading role in the negotiations with the government.

EU called Monday, in a statement after the meeting of foreign ministers of its member states in Luxembourg, on the Syrian opposition to unite and  to actively attend Geneva II conference.

"EU encourages the 'National Coalition' to take the leading role during the negotiations," the statement added.

EU expressed its readiness to support the coalition during the conference and in its relation with the international community.

"We call on all the parties to react positively with Geneva II which will be the prelude of the political solution."

In a different context, the EU's top diplomatic chief, Catherine Ashton considered Monday that significant progress has been achieved in the destruction of the chemical weapons in Syria.
