A number of people were killed and injured Wednesday after a row between an Afghan air force officer and foreign troops at the air force headquarters next to Kabul airport
A number of people were killed and injured Wednesday after a row between an Afghan air force officer and foreign troops at the air force headquarters next to Kabul airport, the defence ministry said.
A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), Major Tim James, confirmed there were casualties among international troops and that shots had been fired at the Afghan air force compound. "We can confirm there was small arms fire during this incident, we're also aware that there are some ISAF casualties," he said.
Afghan defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi said an exchange of fire followed an argument. "At around 11:00am (0630 GMT) within the air force compound, an argument took place between an (Afghan) air force officer and foreign colleagues," he said in a statement. "An exchange of fire followed. A number have been killed and injured, details will come later."
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident in a text message to AFP, although the militants are known routinely to exaggerate their claims.
The ISAF spokesman could not specify how many people had been killed and how many injured, nor their nationality. "We believe the incident has now concluded and we don't know how the shooting started," he said.
