A French-drafted resolution gives a UN mandate to about 4,800 African and French troops being sent to the impoverished nation.
It orders UN leader Ban Ki-moon to produce a report in 90 days on whether a full UN peacekeeping force should be created. Ban has said that up to 9,000 troops could be needed for that.
