Militants from Tripoli’s neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh open fire at Lebanese army troops, killing one soldier and wounding six others.
A statement by the army Command’s Guidance Directorate said that soldiers “came under heavy fire by gunmen stationed in al-Sheikh building in Tabbaneh region.”
The communiqué, issued Thursday night, said that the army unit was rescuing al-Jadded TV crew whose members were covering a protest by residents against the army measure in the region.
“Gunmen intercepted the crew, which called for an intervention by troops present in the area. This soon erupted into clashes between gunmen and the army's soldiers, and later led to renewing the fighting between Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.”
“The Army responded to the sources of fire and is currently surrounding the said building to arrest the gunmen and bring them to justice,” communiqué concluded.
Later on, the command issued another statment in which it announced martyrdom of soldier Abdul Majeed Farhat.
