The 193-member UN General Assembly has elected Jordan to the UN Security Council seat that had previously been rejected by Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia discarded its two-year term in protest of the Security Council not intervening to end Syria’s war and find a solution to Israeli-Palestine conflicts. Standing unopposed, Jordan received 179 votes.
It required two-thirds approval from the assembly.
Four other countries will also join the Security Council on Jan. 1, 2014: Chad, Nigeria, Lithuania and Chile.
