The incident happened in Pashtunabad area on the outskirts of Quetta city, the capital of the oil and gas-rich southwest Baluchistan bordering Iran and Afghanistan.
"A time device planted along the road side close to several pushcarts selling mainly dry fruits went off, killing one person and wounding 15 others," local bomb disposal chief Abdul Razzaq told AFP.
He said the target was not clear, but the area is dominated by Afghan refugees.
A senior local police official Abdul Razzaq Cheema also confirmed the incident and casualties.
There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the explosion.
