Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tuesday that the Syrian people are the only one who determine the fate of their country, wishing that Geneva-II conference will lead to promising results.
“If Iran was invited to attend Geneva 2 conference with keeping the respect of the Iranian people, Iran will attend it," he stated in a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in Baghdad.
Zarif stressed that terrorism and extremism are regional problems which need regional solutions, adding that there must be a political settlement for the crisis as the repercussions are affecting all neighboring countries.
He said that the international conference will not be held for the countries but rather for the Syrian people.
Upon his arrival at Baghdad international Airport on Tuesday, Zarif called on all countries of the region to cooperate in facing these phenomena.
The Iranian foreign Minister said that Iran supports the Iraqi government’s efforts in facing terrorism and extremism and all countries of the region should work for the future of the region.
For his part, Zebari expressed Iraq's support for the presence of all countries concerned with the crisis in Syria in Geneva-II, including Iran, adding that such participation is in the interest of the international political process.
Zarif arrived in Baghdad in a one-day official visit to Iraq in which he is scheduled to hold talks with Iraqi senior officials on the regional developments.
Zarif’s talks in Baghdad will focus on bilateral relations, agreements signed between the two countries and the regional issues, particularly the crisis in Syria and combating terrorism in Iraq. Zarif’s visit to Iraqi came in the framework of a regional tour in the region including Lebanon, Iraq and Syria.
