Iran Proposes Gulf States to Form Nuclear Cooperation Organization

Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi on Wednesday called for formation of Gulf Nuclear Cooperation Organization to help remove concerns of regional countries over Iran’s nuclear activities.

Salehi reiterated that Bushehr nuclear power plant is one of the most modern power plants of its kind and operates under supervision of International Atomic Energy Agency, Russian contractors and experts from Iran's nuclear safety system.

He voiced Iran's readiness to hold talks expert level talks with Gulf states over the safety of Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Salehi suggested a non-governmental organization be established in order to remove any doubt with regards to safety of Bushehr power plant.

He said that if it successfully fulfills its duties, the organization could grow into Persian Gulf Nuclear Cooperation Organization.

Iran is ready to allow nuclear experts from Persian Gulf states to visit Bushehr power plant, Salehi said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the AEOI chief, said inspectors from IAEA are scheduled to arrive in Tehran on January 18 to supervise and confirm the implementation of Geneva nuclear deal by Iran.

On expert talks between Iran and the IAEA, Salehi said the two sides would resume talks on February 8.

Iran-IAEA talks scheduled for January 21 were postponed due to the beginning of implementation of Geneva Deal as of January 20.
