The al-Qaeda-linked militants damaged historical al-Mansoureh Mosque in the northeastern city of Raqqa on Monday. They also have caused damage to many religious sites including mosques and churches after seizing control over the city.
In recent weeks, Western diplomats have warned that the issue of more than a thousand terrorists who have come from Europe to fight in Syria has turned into "a serious concern" for the countries they come from.
Syria was hit by a violent unrest since mid-March 2011, where the Syrian government accuses foreign actors, mainly the Saudi Arabia and Turkey, of orchestrating the conflict by supporting the militant opposition groups with arms and money.
Today hundreds of armed groups, including terrorist takfiri brigades affiliated with Al-Qaeda, are battling both the national army and each other, complicating any effort to reach a political settlement.
