The Lebanese Army clashed with gunmen in the northern city of Tripoli Wednesday after two soldiers were wounded in an attack on their vehicle, The Daily Star newspaper reported.
The clashes broke out at 6 a.m. after gunmen fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a military vehicle in the Tripoli neighborhood of Talaat al-Omari, wounding soldier Hussein Saadeddine and Corporal Fadi al-Jamous.
Lebanese troops fired back at the attackers and engaged the gunmen in hit-and-run shootings for about three hours around Syria Street, Talaat al-Omari and Abu Ali roundabout, the source added.
Two people were also wounded in sporadic skirmishes between Bab al-Tabbaneh and rivals in the neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen.
Most schools and businesses in the northern city remained closed for the sixth day in a row.
Seven people have been killed so far mostly by sniper fire in the five-day sporadic clashes between residents of the two neighborhoods.
The clashes intensified Tuesday after the morning car bomb explosion in the Beirut southern suburb of Haret Hreik that killed three people, the latest in a series of terrorist attacks in the capital’s suburbs.
