Germany's foreign minister will discuss financial aid for Ukraine in Washington this week with US Secretary of State John Kerry and IMF chief Christine Lagarde, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who has served as a key mediator in Ukraine's political crisis, is set to meet Kerry on Thursday and Lagarde on Friday, the foreign ministry spokesman said.

He will stress that the "political stabilisation of the country ... goes hand in hand with a process of economic and financial stabilisation," the spokesman told reporters.

"It seems clear to all involved, in Ukraine and outside, that this won't be possible without outside help," he said.

"From Germany's perspective, it is appropriate for the international community to close ranks on this."

Three months of political turmoil in the former Soviet nation last week escalated into deadly street clashes between police and protesters and the ouster of pro-Moscow president Viktor Yanukovych, who is now wanted for "mass murder".

Ukraine's new interim leaders have appealed for $35 billion (25 billion euros) in emergency aid, amid fears Russia could abandon a $15 billion loan offer.

The German spokesman stressed that "this is not about a confrontation between East and West.

"The aim is to get a very important country in Eastern Europe to have the chance to stand on its own feet."

Steinmeier's message to the United States and International Monetary Fund would be that "the international community works to develop ideas and implement them as fast as possible".
