Lithuania, which currently holds the council's rotating presidency, requested the meeting.

"We have just been informed that the Security Council will hold a private meeting this afternoon at 3:00 pm, followed by consultations to discuss the situation in Ukraine," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said.
