Ashton from Iran: No Guarantee Talks will Reach to Final Nuclear Accord

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Sunday there is "no guarantee" that talks with Iran on its nuclear program will lead to a comprehensive agreement.

"This interim agreement is really important but not as important as a comprehensive agreement (which is)... difficult, challenging, and there is no guarantee that we will succeed," Ashton told a joint news conference in Tehran with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

"It is very important that with the support of the people of Iran for the work to going on by the minister and his team and with the support of international community for my work that we should aim to try to succeed," Ashton said.

Zarif said he had remarkable conversation with Ashton on Iran-EU ties. Zarif said he also focused on such topics as regional developments, future of Iran-EU contacts, anti-narcotics cooperation, security in Afghanistan and critical situation in Syria in his talks with the EU official, according to IRNA.
  
Iran clinched the interim deal in November with the so-called P5+1 -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany. Negotiators are trying to reach a final accord in the coming months.
  
Ashton, RouhaniAshton later met President Hassan Rouhani and discussed issues of mutual interests on Sunday, IRNA said.
 
Heading an EU political and economic delegation, Ashton arrived in Tehran on Saturday at an invitation by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. This is her first visit to Tehran since 2008.

She is also to meet with Speaker of the Iranian parliament (Majlis) Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and Chairman of the Center for Strategic Studies of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati.
