President Nicolas Maduro’s government has asked Cardianl Pietro Parolin to be a witness in good faith in talks to end the conflict with the opposition, which has led to two months of deadly protests in the South American country.
Hardline demonstrators, however, are not happy about the talks and have said that there can be no dialogue while protest leader Leopoldo Lopez and others remain in prison.
Maduro’s position does not appear to be under threat but he does face serious challenges to sort out the roots of the crisis, including the highest inflation in the Americas, shortages of basic goods and violent crime rates among the highest in the world.
