Russian Mid-East Envoy Arrives in Cairo

Russian mid-east envoy Sergey Vershinin Russian envoy for the Middle East peace process Sergey Vershinin arrived in Cairo late Tuesday for a three-day visit to Egypt, World Bulletin website reported.

The Russian envoy is scheduled to hold talks with Egyptian and Arab League officials on the regional peacemaking and the Syrian crisis, sources at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

Vershinin will also discuss the latest developments in Egypt and preparations for the country's presidential election, due on May 26-27.

The Russian envoy, who had visited Ramallah and Jordan as part of a regional tour, will leave Cairo on Friday for Turkey.

The so-called 'Palestinian-Israeli peace talks' hit a snag last month after the Zionist entity refused to release a fourth batch of Palestinian prisoners despite earlier pledges to do so.

In response, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas applied for Palestinian membership in several United Nations agencies and treaties.

The Zionist government, for its part, ordered punitive measures against the Palestinians, including suspending the transfer of tax revenue that the occupation authorities collect on behalf of the Palestinians, as agreed in the 1994 Oslo Accords.
