Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced on Monday candidacy for the coming presidential elections next June.

“Bashar Hafez al-Assad has submitted an application to the Supreme Constitutional Court announcing his candidacy for President of the Republic,” official news agency, SANA, reported.

The agency added that Speaker of the People's Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham said during a session held Monday, that the "Assembly received a notification from the Supreme Constitutional Court stating that Assad has submitted candidacy application to the Court"

In addition to President Assad there are two candidates for the presidential vote announced for June 3. Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri and MP Maher Abdul-Hafiz Hajjar announced earlier his candidacy to the presidential elections.

Registration for presidential candidates was declared open since last week by Speaker al-Laham.
