Thousands of Egyptians gathered in Tahrir square in the capital, rallying for their unity and to show support for Palestinian unity ahead of Nakba day.A week after 15 people were killed in sectarian violence in the country, activists had called for a mass show of unity on Friday.
But many of those gathered in the square were there to show their support for Palestinian unity, ahead of "Nakba day", marking the Israeli occupation to Palestine and the displacement of thousands of Palestinians.
Demonstrators also celebrated the reconciliation deal signed recently between Hamas, Fatah and other Palestinian factions.
Footage aired from the square, the epicenter of protests that overthrew ousted president Hosni Mubarak in February, showed thousands of protesters waving flags of both Egypt and Palestine, in addition to banners that support national unity.
Activists also called for a march to blockaded Gaza at the weekend, to protest the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories. However the interior ministry has urged them to cancel the march.
