Kuwaiti Lawmakers Fight over Guantanamo

Fistfight breaks out between Kuwaiti MPs in parliament during session over Guantanamo prisoners

A fistfight has broken out between Kuwaiti MPs in the parliament during a session about the fate of Guantanamo detainees.

The parliament was holding a debate over two Kuwaiti detainees in the US prison camp in Cuba when MP Hussein al-Kallaf dismissed the prisoners as "Al-Qaeda" militants.

Chaos erupted when Jamaan al-Harish representing the Muslim Brotherhood replied to Kallaf saying that the session was not called to discuss Al-Qaeda but Guantanamo prisoners.

Six lawmakers were involved in the fight prompting MP Abdullah al-Rumi to adjourn the session.

According to AFP news agency, the session was being watched by US lawyers representing the Guantanamo inmates.

Last year, Wikileaks released US embassy cables that quoted Kuwait's interior minister as telling the American ambassador in 2009 that he did not want to see the detainees returned to Kuwait.

In response, the Gulf country's foreign minister rejected the idea, saying Kuwait would never "forget about its sons... detained in Guantanamo without trial".
