Lebanon’s As-Sadd wins bronze medal at international handball tournament as Captain says achievement historic
Lebanese handball team As-Sadd bagged the bronze medal at this year’s edition of the International Handball Federation Super Globe tournament in Doha.
Defeating Al-Zamalek of Egypt, last year’s third-place winners, As-Sadd scored 28 points to the Africa champions’ 23 Wednesday, demonstrating Lebanon’s growing ability to play at a high level in the sport at the international level.
The team returned to Lebanon Thursday and was welcomed at the VIP lounge at Beirut International Airport by politicians and journalists, including Youth Minister in the caretaker government Ali Abdallah and Hezbollah international relations official Ammar Moussawi.
The team’s captain Zoulfikar Daher told Al-Manar website at the airport that the achievement made by his team was historic. “It’s the fruit of collective efforts,” he said, thanking the Lebanese media for standing at the side of the team in its international trip. However, he regretted that the accomplishments are not actually exploited for the interest of sports in Lebanon. “Our team has made many achievements in the last few years. But this didn’t reflect positively on the game,” he highlighted.
