Palestine: Al-Aqsa clashesClashes erupted Wednesday between Palestinians and the Zionist occupation forces in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem after dozens of Jewish settlers forced their way into the holy compound under the protection of Zionist police, a Palestinian guard of the complex said.

“At least 70 settlers accompanied by 40 Israeli forces stormed the holy compound through Al-Magharbeh Gate,” the guard, who asked not to be named, told media outlets.

Tens of Palestinian Muslim worshipers, in response, gathered near Al-Qibali and the Dome of the Rock mosques to protest the intrusion, he added.

In a bid to disperse the Palestinians, the Zionist forces fired rubber bullets and teargas, the guard said.

“At least eight Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets and 28 others suffered teargas inhalation,” he noted.

The intruding Jewish settlers were led by the Zionist Housing Minister Uri Ariel and a number of Jewish extremist leaders, a Palestinian official said.

"They wandered into the compound's courtyards from Al-Magharbeh Gate, passing through the Dome of the Rock, Qibali and Marawani mosques,” Sheikh Omar al-Qiswani, the Palestinian director of the complex, said.

The occupation police have imposed tightened security measures at the gates of Al-Aqsa complex for the second day in a row, barring Muslims from entering the compound, he added.

Jews are celebrating the "Rosh Hashanah" on Wednesday, which will mark the first day of the new Jewish year of 5775.

Groups of Jewish extremists called for storming Al-Aqsa compound during the day to perform Talmudic rituals.

In recent months, groups of extremist Jewish settlers, often accompanied by Zionist security forces, have stepped up their intrusions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, the world's third holiest site for Muslims.
