The quake reportedly damaged a large number of buildings, including 100 schools, and displaced over 100,000 citizens.
An estimated 170,000 square meters of buildings need repairing , Xinhua news agency reports.
“Many houses collapsed and we are investigating the casualties,” a local official told Xinhua. “The aftershocks seem non-stop.”
A rescue operation is under way, with 3,200 troops deployed in the affected area, along with over 800 firefighters and 35 sniffer dogs.
