Palestinian PM Hamdallah: Unity Cabinet to Rebuild Gaza

Palestinian Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah said Thursday that the unity government will rebuild the bombed-out Gaza Strip following a seven-week Zionist offensive.

Palestinian PMPalestinian Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah said Thursday that the unity government will rebuild the bombed-out Gaza Strip following a seven-week Zionist offensive, World Bulletin website reported.

"We have come to Gaza to bring life [in the strip] back to normal," al-Hamdallah told a press conference upon arrival in Gaza for his first visit since the formation of the unity government in June.

He said the unity government will draft a plan to achieve development in the Gaza Strip.

"We have come…to relieve our people in Gaza and rebuild what has been destroyed by the Israeli war machinery," al-Hamdallah said.

The Palestinian Premier and his unity government members arrived in the Gaza Strip on Thursday for their first visit since the formation of the government in June.

He was due to visit neighborhoods destroyed in a 50-day Zionist attack in July and August, and his presence may encourage donor countries to pledge funds to rebuild Gaza, which he estimated will cost $4 billion over the next three years.

Thursday's visit comes only three days before an international donor conference on Gaza reconstruction kicks off in Egypt to rebuild Gaza following a seven-week Zionist offensive that killed more than 2,150 Palestinians and injured nearly 11,000 others.

The onslaught, which came to a halt under an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire on August 26 – damaged and destroyed thousands of buildings.

The Palestinian national unity government was formed following a reconciliation deal signed by Palestinian political rivals Hamas and Fatah in April.

The new government has yet to take political and security control of the Gaza Strip.
