Bassil: Lebanon Opposes ’Safe Corridors’ with Syria

Lebanon will not allow the creation of "safe corridors" to or from Syria.

Lebanon Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil Lebanon will not allow the creation of "safe corridors" to or from Syria, Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said Saturday.

"We will not allow the creation safe corridors or buffer zones in Lebanon, Syria or between the two countries," Bassil told reporters during a tour in the southern city of Marjayoun.

"We will not allow Lebanon to turn into a terror region," he added.

The top Lebanese diplomat went on to accuse Israel of "nurturing sedition" in the region.

Syria has been ravaged by a deadly civil war since 2011, when foreign-backed armed groups started to attack citizens and army posts and to occupy towns and main cities.

More than 191,000 people have been killed in the conflict to date, according to the U.N. statistics.
