The first polling stations opened early Tuesday in key mid-term US legislative elections, with Republicans poised to deal a stinging defeat to President Barack Obama’s Democrats.

The first polling stations opened early Tuesday in key mid-term US legislative elections, with Republicans poised to deal a stinging defeat to  President Barack Obama's Democrats.

The first polling stations to open were in the eastern states of Kentucky, Maine, New Hamshire, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
