Moscow has reportedly expelled a German diplomat in a tit-for-tat move following the expulsion of a Russian diplomat from Germany.
The Wall Street Journal on Saturday quoted an unnamed German official as saying that the diplomat working for “the German Embassy in Moscow has departed as a result of a retaliatory measure imposed by Russian authorities.”
“We are disappointed by this unjustified action and have expressed this to the Russian government,” the German official said.
According to the German weekly Spiegel, the move comes after Berlin expelled a Russian diplomat from the consulate in the western city of Bonn.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry did not comment on the issue.
The Russian diplomat has been suspected of spying for Moscow as tensions escalated between the two countries over the crisis in Ukraine.
