Extremist Israeli settlers desecrated a mosque in the occupied West Bank as they carried out a “price tag” attack in al-Mughayyir village near Ramallah.

The settlers torched the carpets of the mosque and spray Hebrew graffiti on its walls.

Palestinian residents of al-Mughayyir village awoke for dawn prayers to find smoke billowing from the mosque, the mosque imam, Darwish Haj Mohammed, said on Tuesday.
"There are slogans which show without doubt that settlers entered the mosque and burned it," Mohammed said, adding that the arsonists had broken in through the windows.

For his part Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “condemned” the attack as a “criminal act”.
"This is a criminal act intended as a provocation. Israel has pioneered respect of freedom of worship and will work decisively against all who harm this principle," Netanyahu said in a statement.

“Price Tag” attacks are attacks extremist settlers undertake at Palestinians. They are always carried out at mosques.

Settlers have attacked at least five mosques in the West Bank in the last 18 months, Mohammed Daraghmeh, head of the mosques department in the Palestinian Authority's religious endowments ministry, said.
