Five people were killed and at least 25 others were injured in a suicide attack in Basra south of Iraq early Monday morning.
Reuters news agency quoted Head of the Basra provincial council security committee Ali Ghanem Al-Maliki saying that “a suicide bomber drove his car towards a police station, however failed to cross into the compound as guards opened fire at him, and then he blew up his car”.
The attack that left mostly casualties among policemen also caused severe damages to the police buildings and vehicles at the main gate.
The Basra province comprises the vast majority of the Iraqi government’s income and includes 80% of the country’s oil exports.
