Iranians are holding placards in support of the popular uprising of the Egyptians and Tunisians
Iranian men, women and children braved the cold and cloudy weather and marched from several parts of Tehran towards Azadi Square where President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a speech on Friday marking the 32nd anniversary of the Islamic revolution.
On this day, 32 years ago, the Iranian people's decades-long struggle against the regime of the former dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi paid off ending the 2,500 years of monarchic rule in the country.
People were also holding placards in support of the popular uprising of the Egyptians and Tunisians. Chants of "Egyptians, Tunisians, your uprisings are just and we are with you" and "Hosni Mubarak 'mubarak' (congratulations) on the uprising of your people!" were heard in streets of Tehran.
The anniversary date of Imam Khomeini's return to Iran on February 1 marks the beginning of 10 days of celebrations (10-Day Dawn), which culminate on February 11.
Ahmadinejad said that the Middle East will soon be free of the United States and Israel, warning the Egyptians to be "watchful of the friendly face" of the United States as he predicted victory in the Egypt uprising.
Ahmadinejad said Egyptians need to be careful. "They (the United States) have adopted a friendly face and saying 'we are friends of people of North Africa and Arab countries', but be watchful and united. You will be victorious," he said.
He said the United States is an "accomplice to the oppression of the Zionist regime." "If you want people to trust you, first of all do not interfere in affairs of the region, including in Tunisia and Egypt. Let them be by themselves," he added.
