Kurdish fighters have expelled militants of the Takfiri group, ISIL, from the Syrian border town of Kobani after more than four months of fighting.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the event on Monday, noting that the Peshmerga fighters were controlling the strategic town.Kurdish fighters

"The (Kurdish) People's Protection Units have almost full control over Kobani after expelling Islamic State fighters," the monitor group said.

The Kurdish forces have recently been solidifying their control over the city located near the border with Turkey in a serious setback for ISIL, which has been operating in Iraq and Syria.

Just last Monday the Kurdish People's Units (YPG) seized the highly strategic Mishtenur hilltop, reportedly killing 11 ISIL militants and capturing large amounts of weaponry and ammunition.

The Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said the advance was a key strategic victory for the YPG, putting ISIL resupply lines to Aleppo in the west and Raqqa in the east within their line of fire.

ISIL has been battling to capture Kobani since last September, and at one point seemed poised to overrun the Kurdish town. Now the tide has shifted in favor of the Kurds.
