Iran’s domestically-made destroyer has officially joined the Navy’s fleet in the Caspian Sea north of the country, Iranian media reported.

Iran’s domestically-made destroyer has officially joined the Navy’s fleet in the Caspian Sea north of the country, Iranian media reported.

The ship, named Damavand after the country's highest mountain, is 90 meters long, weighs 1,300 tons and is equipped with modern radar, electronic and reconnaissance systems.

High-ranking Iranian officials, including Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Shamkhani described the Caspian Sea as a sea of peace and friendship, saying the Islamic Republic has played a unique role in providing security, particularly energy security in the sea.

As state television showed pictures of the ship, Dehghan said it would be used to aid anti-drugs smuggling operations and counter-terrorism.

The Caspian, the largest enclosed sea in the world, is bordered by Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan but there is as yet no definitive legal regime governing its waters.

Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, commander of Iran's Navy, said the Damavand was "faster and more agile than the Jamaran," referring to Iran's other new class destroyer, a slightly bigger vessel deployed in Gulf waters.
